The Very First iPod Playlist

Fall, 2001

When I used to review Web sites for a living, I often had to critique people's personal sites. Most included a section called "my favorite albums," or the like. Without fail, I would rake them over the coals saying things like, "Hey, Loser Boy, no one cares what you're favorite albums are."

That was over five years ago, and I've earned a living creating and doing tangible things online since then. One thing I've learned is that the point of a personal site IS to list things like "my favorite songs." (As long as it looks good!) It's supposed to be a combination portfolio/bio/ultimate ego trip. Like saying whatever you want about yourself to a therapist for an hour every week, but a whole lot cheaper and much more creatively fulfilling.

Sylvester is absolutely one of the best toys I've ever had. If you love music, you have to get an iPod--trust me on this.

  • Long Way Home -- Stone Temple Pilots

  • Cup Of Coffee -- Garbage

    Shirley at her depressing finest.

  • Billy, Don't Be a Hero -- Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods

  • Deep Purple -- Johnny Mathis

Excellent arrangement of one of my favorite songs.

  • Mambo #5 (Ultimix) -- Lou Bega

Yeah, everybody was sick of this song, but that was a couple of years ago plus this is an great mix.

  • Rock Me Amadeus (Salieri Remix) -- Falco

One long acid flashback you listen to.

  • Why Bother -- Weezer

  • 21st Century Digital Boy -- Bad Religion

  • Never Gonna Stop -- Rob Zombie

  • You and Your Friend -- Snake River Conspiracy

Not enough people use a fuzz bass on songs anymore.

  • Just A Simple Melody -- Ella Fitzgerald

  • Absolutely Not (Thunderpuss Remix) -- Deborah Cox

  • I'm Your Man (Dance Remix) - Lisa Moorish & George Michael

  • Objection (Tango) -- Shakira

Sounds like Gloria Estefan gave Shakira a crash course int he B-52s first album.

  • I'm A Slave 4 U (DJ Brianna Lee Gay Club Mix) -- Britney

Best mix of this I've heard so far.

  • Drive My Car - The Beatles

  • Dig In -- Lenny Kravitz

  • I Want Love -- Elton John

I like the song but the video's totally eepy-cray.

  • Hit Me Baby One More Time -- Type O Negative

Unequivocably the best cover of a song I've heard since Phranc's version of "I Enjoy Being a Girl." Pure GENIUS.

  • Nancy Boy -- Placebo

  • Teardrop City -- The Monkees

  • Stranger In My House (Techno Remix) -- Tamia

  • Ab Fab (Our Tribe Tongue in Cheek Mix) -- Pet Shop Boys

You can never have enough hats, gloves, and shoes.

  • New Year's Eve - Nina Gordon

  • In the Mood -- Brian Setzer Orchestra

  • Overprotected -- Britney

  • Dear Diary -- Travis
